Twitter is all abuzz with Elon Musk hot takes, but all joking aside, I don’t think many people appreciate the cultural significance of Twitter. As a business they’ve seemingly failed to find a strong monetisation model for it but just in terms of its use around the world it’s an incredibly powerful tool.
Trump almost started WW3 with it, incited a coup with it, Zelenskyy has been updating the world on a humanitarian crisis and reaching out to the world for support. The Pope tweets, world leaders tweet, huge corporations tweet.
A lot of people seem to see ‘taking it private’ as a good thing, but we’ve seen that social media is not only a powerful tool, but also a powerful weapon which is now going to be controlled by a man child that can happily call a man saving people trapped in a cave a pedophile just because said man had a better rescue plan than he did. Willingly and happily handing the keys to a verbal nuclear weapon to someone like Elon Musk seems like a huge risk. This man has clearly and blatantly uses the social media platform to manipulate markets and shift many millions of dollars in stock market value around on a whim. If you think he’s spending $44bn so he can get rid of trolls then I think you’re in for a rude awakening I’m afraid.
